You Ask... Patch Answers: New Street Signs?
Several readers have asked about new street signs popping up around town.
Several readers have emailed asking about the new street signs seen around town. They want to know why the signs are there and whether they were approved properly and paid for.
The signs were approved by the Board of Selectmen in September 2010. Many of the town's street signs were old, weathered and difficult to read, so the town decied to put up new ones that were more visible -- white letters on back background.
There was even a debate at the time as to whether Waverly Road should be spelled "Waverley" or "Waverly." After much discussion, "Waverly" won. The signs have already been paid for out of the town's budget from that fiscal year.
The old signs are being removed gradually as well. The Division of Public Works is following along with the company that is installing new signs and removing the old ones, but it takes longer because of manpower and the need to put up new traffic signs ("slow," "merge," etc.). But rest assured, those old signs will be removed.

Glad to see Waverly spelled without the additional 'e' but not sure if there is historic significance to that

Too bad the new signs were done with upper and lower case letters. Makes them hard to read and inconsistent with the new signs done for the historical area near downtown. If more still need to be made, please go back to all caps.

I wonder what the town is doing with the old signs? They should have a lottery or contest - if you want your street sign, you can mail $20 and they will select winners per street or something like that! Great way to raise some money for the town!
