TELL US: What Do You Think of the Bradstreet School Proposal?

Share your thoughts.

Big changes may be in store for part of downtown, depending on what becomes of the Bradstreet School.

Residents voted at Town Meeting to allow the Board of Selectmen to sell the property. And one offer has been made, by Coalition For a Better Acre, which plans to tear down the building and construct apartments and commercial space there.

The proposal would actually cost the town money. The purchase offer is for $300,000, and they are asking the town for more than $700,000 from CPA funds or the Affordable Housing Trust. The idea is for the property to bring in tax revenue and business to the downtown area, and the Bradstreet School costs the town tens of thousands of dollars each year to keep.

The North Andover Historical Commission has spoken out against the proposal because of the plan to tear down the school.

What do you think of the proposal? Discuss in the comments below.

I'm considering a hatchet .. But an axe would be nice. The proposals before us would take several years and consists of seven "phases," each phase including the construction of a building or renovation of an old building. Overall, the plan would cost more than $24 MILLION. Those seven phases, and their projected costs, would be:
•Renovation of the old police station into a school administration building: $2,695,000.
•New gym at the Kittredge Elementary School: $900,000.
•New fire station to house the Fire Department and Emergency Management: $6.6 million.
•Renovation of current Fire Department Headquarters on Main Street into the office of Community Development:$4,377,670.
•Senior Center expansion to include North Andover Thrift Shop: $4,321,000.
•Renovation or new school classrooms: $1 million.
•Improvements to DPW garage and office: $4,595,800.

All zis dirty danzing ez making my boobs sore..

Shame on the Selectman if they don't sell the building and make it a Historical Site! If the mills in Lawrence can be renovated and provide productive space by private investment certainly this facility can provide likewise. What we should really do is tear down the obtuse Selectmen!

i too feel that BRADSTREET SCHOOL should remain as an historical site. putting the building to good use is the best thing. anything like the proposal is an eye-sore, especially to the residents on the saunders street side.

The town needs to be more aggressive and creative in keeping the Bradstreet school. It's easy to sit in those seats and bite for the only buyer. Than again they forget the people of North Andover voted them in. Town fathers let's DO what's best for the town and come up with some creative ideas for the Bradstreet school.

The school is an historical landmark. My generation and the one before mine attended that school. I agree with those who would like to see it preserved. But it's too easy to just say "let's just use it to house town offices". Parkinson's Law has validity because, to bureaucrats, the "easy " way out of a leadership dilemma is to expand the size and footprint of government.

The challenge here is to preserve this piece of the Town's history while putting it on the tax rolls. The true "leaders" in elected positions will work to do that. Those citizens who place a high value on the Town's historic landmarks will dig into their OWN pockets (not their neighbor's) and make investments in them. There's a good reason why these "preservation" projects usually fail when placed on a referendum ballot. Beware of "leaders" who eschew the popular vote route.

They are actually considering a proposal to pay $400k to give the property away? This should be an easy one to take a pass on. I understand how the selectmen need to consider all proposals but this sounds ridiculous.

Hey Selectmen, where are you hiding? Let's hear your rationale! Perhaps one or more of you have something to gain from the sale? Sounds very suspicious to be selling a property and also providing money. Let's hear from our citizens to stop such a travesty! This is just how Washington works, how Governor Disaster and the legislature on Beacon Hill works! Let's give the Selectmen away! Something called addition through subtraction! Let's get rid of these hacks!

The selectmen have a meeting every week - do they not - especially this time of year? And they will discuss the proposal - don't worry about that.

Hi Mr. Reagan, the Board of Selectmen have not voted on this and said they plan to discuss the proposal at their next meeting. Monday's presentation by the developer was just informational.

We know how informational works Mr. McGonigle.....Just look at the vacant Police Station. How long has that been vacant ..... too long, much like many of the Selectmen's minds. Let's stop with the informational interviews and get on with the positive action for this community, stop acting like bureaucrats and start behaving like citizens of North Andover who actually have the community at heart. Hmmm! Is there something in it for one you guys?

It was a presentation for the selectmen so they could directly ask questions then. They'll have more discussion and public input soon, so I suggest you go express your views.
