Share Our Strength Honors Local Cookie Maker

Michele Gorham was recognized for her fight against childhood hunger.

Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit devoted to hunger, recently honored several people nationwide in the food and hospitality industry for their tireless work on behalf of hungry children.

Michele Gorham of North Andover, owner of received the Great American Bake Sale Leadership Award.

For three years, Gorham has incorporated the Great American Bake Sale -- an initiative of Share Our Strength -- into her business at every opportunity. She has hosted numerous bake sales and has promoted the charity on her Web site. She has also spent countless hours recruiting others to help the cause.

Gorham was also one of the founding members of the charity's social media community, "Bake Sale Neighborhood." She even hosted a golf tournament and raised more than $6,500 in a single day.

"I believe that a community that helps one another is a community that thrives, and that by bringing the issue of childhood hunger to the forefront for my company, my family and my community, I can make a difference," Gorham said. "It's an absolute honor to be a part of this organization that's building the bridge that will close the gap between the food that's out there and the children who need it."

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than one in five children in America are at risk of hunger.
