Rolf's New Menu Offers Comfort Cuisine
With a new chef onboard and an updated interior, Rolf's Pub is evolving from a neighborhood bar to a traditional pub.
Rolf's, 39 Main Street, has a new pub style menu of sandwiches, burgers and salads and appertizers. When Lesley Carlson took over the family business, 12 years ago, she had the vision of changing the look and feel from a neighborhood bar to a traditional pub.
Rolf's new chef is Pete Oakes, a North Andover native. He spent 23 years as a research scientist until a layoff empowered him to follow his passion for cooking.
While the new menu still includes some of the fried food and pizza favorites, many of the sandwiches go back to Carlson's dad Rolf, fondly known as Dutchie. "He used to do a great chicken barbecue sandwich which is now on the menu, and we brought back the Delmonico steak sandwich," said Carlson.
"All the bread for the sandwiches are fresh from Tripoli bakery," explained Oakes.
Menu items range from $3 to $8, and all sandwiches are served with a pickle and chips. There are weekly specials, and chili is served Wednesdays for $6.50 and Guinness Stew over mashed potatoes is served Thursdays-Saturday, also for $6.50.
Oakes makes his own salsa, and he has recently bought a hand press to make stuffed burgers that will be added to the menu, starting next week.
"We are really excited about the new burgers," Carlson said. She explained that the five signature choices will include American, Greek, Italian, French and Mexican for around $7-8 dollars with chips and a pickle. The Greek burger is made with kalamata olives, feta, red onions and Greek dressing on a grilled roll.
Carlson and Oakes are proposing a chili cook-off before Super Bowl Sunday. "It is still in the planning stages," explained Oakes.
Lunch is served Monday through Tuesday from 11am-2pm and is expanded for dinner Wednesday-Friday to about 8pm. There is weekly Karaoke, entertainment, video games, keno and the lottery. The pub hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-12:30am, Saturday-Sunday, 10am-12:30am.
