On the Move

"Start by getting through the worst space first; so often people will save the unsavory tasks for last and leave it looming."

The evolution of homeownership is different today than in generations past. Folks that are entering retirement age these days are more likely than their parents to look to downsizing the family home. The idea of moving to place with less space to clean that requires less maintenance is an attractive one; but for most homeowners the idea of downsizing often overwhelming at the same time.

Preparing to sell a home lived in for over twenty years in which one’s children were likely reared will bring on emotions for all family members. It is important to talk about the move well in advance of making it a reality to gain support from family and friends. Allow plenty of time to sort through your possessions, pairing them down to a smaller subset of what fills your home.

Often the idea of wading through the collections of stuff accumulated by a family is enough to want to call it quits. This is where family and friends can be helpful. Separate items that belong to the children that have been stored around the house and ask them to take them over; they can decide what to keep and what to donate.

Start by getting through the worst space first; so often people will save the unsavory tasks for last and leave it looming. Tackle the basement, attic or garage first. After the worst is over, everything else will be a breeze.

Sort items into categories; must keep, sell, donate, heirloom gift and dispose. Keep I mind that different family members have different levels of attachment to the contents of the home; the antique buffet that has been in the family for years may not be something that your children want to hang on to, yet the “pickle dish” has to be kept in the family.

Once the sorting process has been accomplished, talk with your real estate agent about what may need to be done to your home prior to placing it on the market and start looking around for an idea of where you may be moving to.

Deciding to downsize the family home isn’t a subject taken lightly. But the realities of living in a home that requires more maintenance often are the tipping point in determining the right time to make the move.
