North Andover and Masconomet to Renew Rivalry in Girls Hoops Tuesday Evening
Knights hold final scrimmage before season opener against Beverly; Coach Breen reveals 2010-11 starting lineup.
The North Andover versus Masconomet rivalry does not end on Thanksgiving.
The Scarlet Knights girls varsity hoops squad scrimmaged Beverly on Friday night in a final tune-up for their regular season opener against their traditional adversary Masconomet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
"I'm sure they're going to be pretty fired up to get us," said North Andover head coach Susan Breen.
North Andover beat Masconomet for the first time since 2005 last season in overtime at Crozier Gym.
In February, the Knights went into Masco and defeated the Chieftans to sweep the season series.
Coach Breen gave her squad copies of February's game to review before Tuesday's season opener.
Last year North Andover had an identical finish to that of the previous year's squad, losing to Arlington Catholic in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
"I think we had a really successful season," said Breen.
The team finished at a 15-7 clip in each of the past two years.
This year's team finds its strengths in athleticism and speed despite a lack of size.
"I think we're pretty athletic, and that's going to be a strength for us," said Breen.
"We're not tall," added Breen, whose tallest player is 5'10'' sophomore Michaela Mello.
"We have to just outthink them and outwork them," Breen said on overcoming the lack of size.
With the preseason now over and the season tipping off with a bang at Masconomet, here is the moment you have all been waiting for, the starting line-up for your North Andover High School Scarlet Knights.
Point Guard – Amanda Foote
This senior captain begins her fourth year of her NAHS career on the varsity squad. Foote is coming off an all-star season and also has the ability to move to shooting guard.
Shooting Guard – Morgan Lumb
Lumb led her team in scoring last year as a freshman. There are high expectations of her as a sophomore who possesses skills in all phases of the game, passing, dribbling, shooting, and defense.
"I guess it's like playing with Rondo; how do you not love playing with him?" said Breen of Lumb.
"She just get's the game," added Breen.
Small Forward – Julia Titone
Titone is a junior and an experienced member of this year's squad. After the three senior captains graduate, she will be a key senior on next year's squad.
"Julia can shoot well from outside," said Breen.
Power Forward – Caitlin Enright
Enright is another one of three senior captains on the experienced Scarlet Knight's team. She is entering her third year on the varsity squad.
Center – Erika Zahoruiko
Another senior captain, Zahoruiko was one of the team's top performers of last season earning herself All-League honors as one of the division's top 12 players. Zahoruiko begins her fourth and final year on the North Andover varsity squad.
Key Bench Players
Alex Medlock
Medlock, a junior, rolled an ankle in Friday's scrimmage. She is day-to-day and expected to play in Tuesday's season opener.
Pam Coufos
Coufos is an energetic sophomore guard. She brings speed and spark as one of her coach's first options coming off the bench.
Michaela Mello
The team's tallest member is Michaela Mello, a 5'10'' sophomore. She will be expected to spell senior captain Erika Zahoruiko and match up against the toughest centers in the league.
The stage is now set for Tuesday night's opener as the players have the weekend plus Monday to prepare.
"It's been a good preseason because the kids have are just really positive," said Breen.
North Andover's first home game of the season will be Friday, Dec. 17 against Wilmington.
