Letter to the Editor: Lyons Wrong on HB 1060
The following was submitted by Margo P. Goldman.
The death of a child causes incalculable pain and loss to the parents. Moreover, when the tragedy is due to suicide, that pain is compounded by knowing it might have been preventable. Dozens of gay and lesbian teens every year commit suicide after prolonged anti-gay bullying.
Suicide among gay youths is much higher than among their straight peers. However, the risk of suicide can be significantly reduced by counseling and an empathic ear. As a psychiatrist, I understand the value of counseling-- being heard and understood can make the critical difference between life and death. That's why I was astonished to learn about Rep. James Lyons' attempt to make it harder for gay youth to seek and receive this much-needed help. He co-sponsored HB1060, a bill that would have severely limited gay teenagers' access to counseling and support.
Gay or straight, all our children deserve an adolescence free of isolation and despair.Rep. Lyons risked the health and safety of these children in order to advance his ideological agenda. Regardless of one's moral beliefs, choosing ideology over kids' well-being is wrong-- that's why I believe it's crucial to oppose Rep. Lyons' re-election November 6th.

I'm sorry Dr Goldman believes government should usurp parental child raising rights.
Why doesn't she support parental approval and being notified what's going on with their kids when in school?
Does anyone support schools taking over parental responsibility?

I agree with you 100% Whenever there is a problem with a child in school they should be sent home immediately so the parent can solve the problem!

That's how I see it.
If parents were parenting the kids would be better off and the schools could focus more on their role as educators, not Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Counselors, Mothers, Fathers, etc.....

Amen to that!
Unfortunately these days, there are no parents at home to which to send the child.
So what do you do in the mean time, let them roam the streets and get into more trouble or let the school baby-sit them until a parent picks them up?

George, I'm with you--100% agree. But that's where the problem is in education and until it's solved, it will continue to get worse.
