Five Things That Made Our Week: Dec. 4 to Dec. 10
A look back at the week in news.
This December week was packed full of headlines. Here were five of them:
1. Controversial Hire: School Committee Chair Chris Allen came under fire from many in town when it was revealed that she had hired David Castricone, the former North Andover High School wrestling coach charged with possession of child pornography, to fix her roof.
2. Confrontation: At the Board of Selectmen meeting, Allen and her husband confronted selectmen about comments they had made about hiring Castricone, and tempers flared.
3. Trees for Troops: The annual Trees for Troops event was held at Smolak Farms, and Sen. Scott Brown stopped by to visit the troops. He even made a holiday greeting video for the troops on Patch.
4. Family Troubles: Congressman John Tierney's brother-in-law was convicted of racketeering relating to his brother's illegal offshore gambling operation. And Republican candidate Richard Tisei, who seeks his party's nomination to run against Tierney, was surprised by the news of his sister's drug arrest in August.
5. Teacher Mystery: A teacher at North Andover Middle School was escorted out of that school by police nearly two weeks ago, and the school administration is still not saying why specifically. But police have said they found no criminal wrongdoing in that investigation.
