Town Moderator Mark DiSalvo has announced his picks for the School Building Committee.

Maureen Walsh Sakakeeny and Thomas Zahoruiko will join the seven-member committee -- replacing current Chair James Lafond, who is stepping down, and Harold "Dutch" Dushame, who passed away in June.

“This important job in town government requires high skill and commitment, and I thank Jim for his contribution to our town, just as we all wish Dutch were still serving," DiSalvo said. "He looks down now and will bless the committee and our Town from afar."

Sakakeeny is a professional civil engineer and co-owner and Principal of SAK Environmental LLC of North Andover and has lectured at Tufts, UMass Lowell and Merrimack College.

Zahoruiko is a real estate developer and homebuilder and has constructed more than 150 homes in four towns. He constructed and donated three ball fields to the town at Carter Fields.

“I am pleased that professionals of such significant industry caliber have accepted my invitation to serve North Andover,” DiSalvo said.

The School Building Committee, consisting of four people appointed by the town moderator and three appointed by the School Committee, handles the design, bidding and construction of school building projects.

DiSalvo himself once served as chair of the committee and was instrumental in the design of Thomson Elementary School and Sargent Elementary School.

“These members will be responsible for millions of dollars of taxpayer funds and have the fiduciary responsibility to comply with state law and School Building Assistance Bureau regulation so that reimbursement funds are returned to North Andover," DiSalvo said. “I know these individuals have the credentials, professional skills, collective knowledge and good judgment to fulfill their mandate as part of the School Building Committee."
