Dillon MacInnis: a President With a Ukulele

Dillon MacInnis is a freshman at North Andover High School off to a great start.

Dillon MacInnis, 15, is making a great impression in his freshman year at North Andover High School. MacInnis is an athlete, musician, class president and honors student and is involved in clubs and activities at the high school.

"Dillon has been a breath of fresh air for our school, seizing the opportunities that have presented themselves to him," said guidance counselor Steve Nugent. He has not wasted any time in putting himself out there."

MacInnis lived in Tewksbury prior to moving here in the seventh grade. He attended St. Michael's school up until this year, transferring to NAHS. He had a wonderful transition and adapted quickly. He was one of 16 students entering the high school from St. Michael's, so he had friends to begin the year with.

MacInnis played for the freshman football team this past season and is also on the ski team his first year. He first learned to ski at age four.

MacInnis is one of few freshmen to be a member of the Student Ambassador's club. The club had also helped welcome him in the beginning of the year. He was able to meet many students at the events held by the Student Ambassador's, and wanted to join so he could welcome others.

MacInnis was also elected the freshman class president this year. When he was running for president, he had the support of his football coach and team. They wore t-shirts during the election that he had made with his mother. His main goal for this year as president is to unite the students. He is also in the process of beginning a suggestion box. He meets with the other freshmen class officers twice a month.

"It's obvious that Dillon cares about his peers and that his peers respect him tremendously," said Rick DelleChiaie, MacInnis' teacher. "He has earned this respect through his compassion and diligent work, both inside and outside of class."

MacInnis considers himself to be very musically inclined. He has been playing the piano since he was in kindergarten, is familiar with the snare drum, has been playing the ukulele, a Hawaiian instrument, since March, learned the guitar last year, and began playing the bass guitar this past year, as well.

"I enjoy playing the ukulele the most. It is really fun to play," MacInnis said. NAHS holds an event, "Coffee House," three times a year. The event is run by the chorus and band departments. MacInnis has played the electric ukulele once so far, and plans on playing in the upcoming events.

MacInnis is also an honors student, and is doing very well academically. He has a set schedule where he finishes his homework, participates in his activities, and spends time with his family. He also spreads his homework out over the weekend to make time for his friends.

"My motivation comes from my family," MacInnis said. "As a whole, they encourage me to always try new things. My older brother and sister have influenced me positively and have always been there for me."

MacInnis has already considered what he wants to pursue after high school is over. He plans on attending a four year college in California, and then attending law school in Washington D.C. He wants to become a defense lawyer.

MacInnis is most proud of his dedication and involvement with school activities and sports. "Don't be afraid to try new things," said MacInnis. "Chances are they will work out if you set your mind to it."
