Brooks School, Wheelabrator Donate for July 4th Events

Combined, the two have donated $22,500 for the town's festivities.

Thanks to a local waste management company and a local private school, North Andover will have its July 4 festivities without breaking the bank.

Brooks School has donated $15,000 for the fireworks, and Wheelabrator has donated $7,500 for the festival on the Common.

The fireworks show is expected to cost about $15,000. Fireworks shows are expensive mostly because of the safety precautions involved.

"Once pyrotechnics are brought into a community, they have to be escorted by the Fire Department from then until the display goes off," North Andover Festival Committee Chairman Jeff Coco said. "And then after the fact, they have to do a search on the ground to make sure there are no unexploded fireworks that could hurt people."

Coco said there would also be police detail at the three-day event, including detail overnight since vendors will have their tents there for one of those nights.

The police and fire departments used to factor the festival into their budgets. But with budgets tightening all over town, that is no longer a luxury they can afford.

Total cost of the festival (aside from fireworks) is expected to be $11,850. Wheelabrator's money will be used to offset that cost, which includes a DJ, magicians, bands, a rock climbing wall, electrical equipment and more.
